Teatro Popular Melico Salazar is one of San José's most recognizable theatres and an important centre for the performing arts. The historic building dates from 1928, with a striking late-Neoclassical design distinguished by Corinthian columns, balustraded balconies, decorative reliefs and Modernist details. Recognized for its historic and architectural heritage value in Costa Rica, the venue combines an imposing appearance with substantial capacity: the main auditorium has around 1,170 seats arranged across four levels and hosts theatre, dance, opera, concerts and other stage productions.
Inside, the theatre retains a traditional performance-hall atmosphere, with a broad stage, stalls and upper galleries focused toward the performance area. The multi-level layout is well suited to productions in which speech, music and visual presentation are equally important, while foyers and supporting public spaces provide room for audiences before performances and during intervals. Dedicated spaces are available for visitors with reduced mobility in the stalls, although the heritage building does not have a lift serving the upper levels.
The theatre is located at Calle Central Alfredo Volio, San José, Costa Rica, in the heart of the city centre. Its principal approaches are at street level along Calle Central and Avenida Segunda, making the entrance convenient for pedestrians and for passengers being dropped off nearby.
