About the city
Obihiro, the urban center of the Tokachi region on Japan's island of Hokkaido, is an appealing base for visitors who want to combine their trip with concerts, sporting competitions, and other events. The city has a compact center, a developed food scene, and a range of cultural and sports facilities, including Obihiro Shimin Bunka Hall and the sports venues of the Obihiro no Mori complex. Thanks to its combination of urban amenities and the expansive landscapes of Tokachi, a stay can easily be extended beyond the event itself.
The main transport hub is JR Obihiro Station on the Nemuro Main Line, providing rail connections to other parts of Hokkaido. For local transportation, Tokachi Bus and Hokkaido Takushoku Bus are important, with routes connecting the station and city center with different districts and facilities, while taxi services are also practical for reaching individual sports halls and stadiums. Visitors arriving by air use Tokachi-Obihiro Airport, which is connected with the urban area by direct bus services, making it easier to continue the journey to accommodation and event locations.
Before or after an event, it is worth discovering Midorigaoka Park, a large green space close to the center with museum, cultural, and recreational facilities. In the evening, the city's character is particularly evident at Kita no Yatai, known for its small establishments and Tokachi cuisine, while a walk around the Obihiro Station area offers an easy way to discover the city's shops, restaurants, and everyday rhythm. This combination of events, local food, and a relaxed urban environment makes Obihiro an interesting destination for visitors who want to experience more than just the ticketed event.
